Antique gilded frame restoration

A frame is a work of art in its own right, in dialogue with the work it carries. We restore frames of every style — Louis XIV, Régence, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Empire, Napoléon III, Restauration, Art Nouveau — using period-appropriate techniques.

01

Consolidation and assembly

Loose mitres are re-glued with animal-skin glue, splits consolidated with wood or traditional mastic. The structure regains its rigidity before any decorative work begins.

02

Sculpted ornament restoration

Acanthus, shells, rocailles, beads: each missing motif is recreated in the style of the frame, then integrated with the existing gilding. About twenty sculpting tools are used depending on the profiles.

03

Gilding and patina

Gold leaf retouches are placed with precision, then patinated to match the original gilding. The goal is not to make it look new, but to restore unity to the piece.
